Maria Newman offers a variety of composition seminars and masterclasses at the collegiate and graduate levels.
Collaborative Commission and Performance Coaching
In which a student or faculty member commissions a new piece and works directly with Ms. Newman to craft and fine tune the piece. This experience gives the commissioner hands-on experience working with a composer, sharing ideas and articulating wishes, and building a work from the ground up.
Once the piece has reached completion, Ms. Newman will work with the student or faculty's educational institution or orchestra leading up to the performance of the new work.
This Seminar is offered both in-person and virtually through Zoom.

Group Composition Seminars
Ms. Newman teaches group Composition Seminars to advanced high school, collegiate, and graduate level student groups. These Seminars can be facilitated by your educational institution, orchestral ensemble, or other officially recognized group.
In the Group Composition Seminar, students will learn the basics of composition and music theory, according to their skill level entering the clinic, and will create their own compositions. Ms. Newman will offer advice, corrections, and guidance as students write their works. At the end of the Seminar, Ms. Newman will perform each student's new work for the group and offer both advice on where improvements can be made and guidance as to what is already effective in the piece.
This Seminar offers students the opportunity to work with a composer at the top of her field, learn a bit about the composition process, stretch their creative muscles, and learn how to effectively communicate with musicians to achieve the most truthful and impactful performance of the composer's work.
Group Composition Seminars are offered both in-person and virtually via Zoom or Facetime.

Finding Your Compositional Voice
Often thought of as the "Black Sheep" of the Newman Family, Ms. Newman knows how difficult and how liberating it can be to find your own unique musical voice. This seminar focuses on the importance of individuality and personal style in composition. Throughout the course of the seminar, Ms. Newman will encourage students to take risks in their composition, try new and exciting techniques, and above all, bring themselves to their work.
The objective of this seminar is to empower students to take charge of their own artistry and career trajectory and to shed the weight of expectation to do things the "right way."
This Seminar is offered both in-person and virtually through Zoom.

Chamber Music Coaching & Masterclasses
Ms. Newman offers both in-person and virtual coaching and masterclasses to collegiate students, graduate students, and professional chamber ensembles.
These clinics can be focused on performance of a piece by Ms. Newman or simply focused on technical improvement and ensemble work.
Coaching and Masterclasses are offered both in-person and virtually through Zoom.

Orchestral Coaching
Ms. Newman offers both in-person and virtual coaching for symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, string ensemble, wind ensemble, brass ensemble and more.
In these clinics, Ms. Newman will join your ensemble to coach you on a piece from her music catalogue, with the aim of preparation for an upcoming performance and/or technical improvement. This experience provides students with the opportunity to work alongside a living composer as they bring her music to life.
Orchestral Coaching is offered both in-person and virtually through Zoom.
