Maria Newman's Art of the Chamber Orchestra: Book I opens with the Concerto for Cello and String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival in Los Angeles, California, the Concerto for Cello and String Orchestra was premiered by the Gold Coast Festival Orchestra in June of 2002. The performance featured on this album was recorded by the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra under the baton of maestro Scott Hosfeld, with Andrew Shulman serving as Cello Soloist. 

Next on the album is Ms. Newman's Chorales for Brass and Percussion. This piece was commissioned by the University of Southern California for performance by their Concert Band in 2001, in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Ms. Newman's late father, Alfred Newman's, birth. The piece had its premiere performance in 2002 at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California. 

Commissioned by the Dorian Orchestra Festival at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Ms. Newman's Concerto for Viola and String Orchestra takes the penultimate spot on the album. This recording features the work of the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra under the baton of maestro Scott Hosfeld, with Maria Newman serving as Viola Soloist. 

Ms. Newman's Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra rounds out the album, featuring the work of the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Scott Hosfeld. This piece was commissioned in 2006 by the San Luis Obispo Symphony Orchestra and premiered that same year.
